Gabonese Football Star Aaron Boupendza dies at 28

Gabon and Zhejiang FC striker Aaron Boupendza has died at age 28 after reportedly falling from a building in Hangzhou, China. The international forward, who earned 35 caps for Gabon, had just joined the Chinese Super League side from Romania’s Rapid Bucharest in January.

Boupendza rose to prominence during the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, where his performances for the Panthers cemented his reputation as a dynamic attacker.

His 12-year career saw him play across four continents, including stints in France’s Ligue 2, Turkey’s Süper Lig, and Major League Soccer with Cincinnati.

Gabon’s football federation led tributes, remembering him as “a great striker who left his mark on Gabonese football.” The new elected President Brice Oligui Nguema also paid tribute to the late Gabonese player.

The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear as authorities investigate. Boupendza’s sudden passing has sent shockwaves through African football circles, where teammates recall his relentless energy and trademark goal celebrations.
