Football/ Real Madrid: Xabi Alonso responds to his link to Real Madrid as head coach

Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso has brushed off rumors linking him to Real Madrid, calling it “not a good time” to discuss his future. The 43-year-old, who led Leverkusen to an unbeaten Bundesliga and German Cup double last season, is reportedly a candidate to replace Carlo Ancelotti if the Italian departs.

With Leverkusen six points behind Bayern Munich and five games left, Alonso emphasized focusing on the present: “I don’t want to talk about speculation. What’s important is what’s happening now.” Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro recently stated Alonso is “comfortable” and planning for next season.

Meanwhile, ex-Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp—also linked to Madrid—has no interest, per his agent, as he remains committed to his role with Red Bull’s global soccer operations.

Alonso, a former Real Madrid and Bayern Munich midfielder, rejected interest from top clubs last year to stay at Leverkusen. After reviving the club from near relegation in 2022, he has cemented his reputation as one of Europe’s brightest managers.

His only defeat last season came in the Europa League final (3-0 vs. Atalanta) amid a 53-game unbeaten streak.
