DR Congo elevates science as national priority with 12th technology week launch

Education Minister Raïssa Malu inaugurated the 12th Science and Technology Week under the theme Envision tomorrow: Science and Society,” marking a bold step in President Félix Tshisekedi’s push to position the DRC as an African innovation hub.

The nationwide, community-driven event – aligned with Osaka’s 2025 World Expo participation – spotlights AI, green energy, and immersive education tools.

This isn’t just about labs; it’s about bringing STEM to every province,” Malu emphasized, underscoring the government’s strategy to democratize knowledge.

Analysts note the initiative reflects Tshisekedi’s dual focus since taking office: leveraging technology for social mobility while elevating Congo’s global scientific profile.

With special emphasis on youth and women innovators, the week-long program aims to bridge the gap between research and grassroots development needs.

“When we talk about sovereignty, it starts with intellectual empowerment,” remarked a presidential adviser, pointing to recent policy shifts that have tripled STEM funding since 2021.

The event coincides with Congo’s bid to host the 2027 Pan-African AI Summit – a move signalling its ambitions to lead continental tech transformation.
