Burkina Faso launches €8.5 million project to modernize bogodogo Hospital and combat viral hepatitis

The Burkinabe government has taken a major step in strengthening its healthcare system with the launch of a comprehensive 5.6 billion CFA franc (€8.5 million) project to upgrade Bogodogo University Hospital’s viral hepatitis prevention and treatment services. Health Minister Dr. Robert Lucien Kargougou officially inaugurated the initiative on May 5, 2025, funded through Italian cooperation over three years.

The project features three key components:

  1. Infrastructure Modernization (40% of budget)– Managed by UNOPS, this phase includes renovating critical hospital blocks (emergency, maternity, central services), constructing a blood bank, and acquiring medical equipment while enhancing technical maintenance capacities.
  2. Hospital governance & digital transformation– Under WHO supervision, this component focuses on digitizing medical records, interconnecting departments, establishing management committees, and nationwide biomedical equipment maintenance improvements.
  3. Viral hepatitis response– Includes specialized staff training and implementing prevention mechanisms as part of Burkina Faso’s strategy to build a more resilient healthcare system against chronic diseases.

This investment reflects the government’s commitment to modernizing medical infrastructure and addressing public health priorities, with viral hepatitis – a major health burden – receiving targeted intervention through upgraded facilities and strengthened institutional capabilities.
