2025 Arab Cup Draw: The date is set, scheduling clash raises concerns for African Nations

FIFA has announced that the draw for the 2025 Arab Cup will take place on May 24 in Doha, Qatar, with the tournament running from December 1 to 18. However, the timing poses a major challenge for African teams, as the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) kicks off just three days later on December 21 in Morocco.

Six AFCON-qualified nations—Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Comoros, and Sudan—face a tight turnaround between the two competitions. While teams like Libya and Mauritania, not in AFCON, may use the Arab Cup for preparation, others must balance squad fatigue and priorities.

Defending champions Algeria, who won the 2021 edition against Tunisia, have appointed Madjid Bougherra as coach for the tournament.

He has already confirmed that key players from the senior team will not participate, opening doors for fringe players to shine.

The Arab Cup, traditionally featuring African-based and Gulf league players, could serve as a showcase for emerging talent while sparing AFCON-bound stars.

Yet, with both tournaments back-to-back, federations must strategize carefully to avoid burnout ahead of the continental showdown.

As the draw approaches, the debate over FIFA’s scheduling intensifies—will the Arab Cup be a stepping stone or a stumbling block for Africa’s elite?
