Eurovision: Céline Dion sends heartfelt message as the competition kicks off in Switzerland

Céline Dion made a surprise virtual appearance during Eurovision’s first semi-final, dashing hopes of a live performance in her adoptive homeland. The Canadian icon, who won the 1988 contest for Switzerland, appeared in a pre-recorded clip expressing her emotional ties to the country. “Switzerland believed in me and gave me something extraordinary,” she said, as the competition returned to Swiss soil for the first time in 31 years.

Meanwhile, Sweden’s quirky entry Bara Bada Bastu (“Let’s Take a Sauna”) emerged as the odds-on favourite (40%) to win after qualifying for Saturday’s final.

The accordion-driven comedy act could secure Sweden a record-breaking eighth Eurovision victory, surpassing Ireland’s current seven-title haul.

Ten acts advanced from Tuesday’s semi-final in Basel, setting the stage for a high-stakes finale.

While Dion’s absence disappointed fans, the show delivered its trademark mix of spectacle and surprises—proving Eurovision’s enduring appeal.
