Mali: A decisive step towards energy sovereignty under the leadership of President Assimi Goïta

Under the enlightened leadership of General Assimi Goïta, a central figure in Mali’s Transitional Government, the country has taken a new strategic step toward energy sovereignty. During the Council of Ministers meeting held on May 21, 2025, at the Koulouba Palace, a key infrastructure project was approved to strengthen the electrical grid around Bamako. This initiative is part of ongoing reforms led by Malian authorities to lay the foundation for sustainable development.

At the initiative of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdoulaye Diop, the Council approved the ratification of a loan agreement worth 30 billion CFA francs, signed with the West African Development Bank (BOAD). These funds will partially finance the construction of the northern section of the 225 kV ring around Bamako—an essential link to improve electricity distribution in the capital.

The planned work—including the construction of a high-voltage line, the creation of new substations, and the upgrading of existing ones—reflects a clear political will to put an end to chronic power outages, meet growing energy demand, and provide Malians with a reliable and modern electricity network. It also serves as a lever to support industrialization and employment in a country where access to energy remains a major constraint on economic development.

This project once again demonstrates President Assimi Goïta’s commitment to building a resilient and self-reliant Mali. By investing in strategic infrastructure, his leadership is charting a clear course: that of a forward-looking, strategic state that places the essential needs of its people at the heart of its priorities.
