Football/ Guinea cancels international friendlies after government pulls funding

In a surprise move, Guinea’s national football team has withdrawn from its upcoming FIFA international friendlies against Niger and Tunisia in Morocco after the government refused to finance the matches.

The abrupt decision, reported by local outlets including Conakry Sport, came after the Ministry of Sports declined to allocate funds, citing financial prudence. A government source stated, “There’s no point wasting money preparing for competitions where we aren’t strong contenders,” while adding that the football federation (FEGUIFOOT) must now “learn to stand on its own feet.”

The cancellation leaves the Syli National without critical preparation ahead of future tournaments—a major setback for coach Kaba Diawara’s squad.

Critics argue the move reflects deeper tensions between authorities and the federation, raising questions over Guinea’s football development priorities.

With no alternative funding secured, the team’s absence underscores the financial challenges facing African federations reliant on state support.
