Burkina Faso / Public health: FCFA 33 billion to protect Burkinabe from malaria
In a challenging security and economic context, the Burkinabe government has reaffirmed its commitment to public health. On Thursday in Komsilga, Prime Minister Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo officially launched the 6th national universal and free distribution campaign of long-lasting insecticide-treated mosquito nets (LLINs). This nationwide initiative aims to significantly reduce the incidence of malaria, which remains the leading cause of medical consultations in the country’s health centers.
With a substantial investment of 33 billion CFA francs, the state is once again demonstrating that the health of its people is a top priority. More than 15 million next-generation mosquito nets will be distributed across the entire country. The Prime Minister praised this collective effort and urged all involved to show rigor, integrity, and dedication to achieving the set objectives.
The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with technical agencies and international partners, is overseeing the campaign, which mobilizes 33,000 volunteers and 7.000 health workers. Their mission is not only to distribute the nets to households but also to identify and eliminate mosquito breeding grounds.
The 2024 figures are alarming: over 10 million cases of malaria and more than 3.000 deaths have been recorded. This campaign stands as both a public health response and a strong social action, driven by the government’s will to protect the most vulnerable populations, particularly women and children.
Beyond the distribution, this initiative represents an act of health sovereignty and resilience in the face of ongoing challenges.
