Burkina Faso: Fight against drugs, more than 133 tons of illicit substances seized in 2024

On the occasion of the 38th International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, Burkina Faso reaffirmed its commitment to the fight against this scourge. The official ceremony was held on Wednesday, 26 June 2025, in Ouagadougou, under the presidency of the Minister of Security, who is also the President of the National Committee for the Fight against Drugs (CNLD), represented by Commander Ahmed OUEDRAOGO, Secretary General of the said ministry.

This year’s theme was: “First national strategy to combat drugs in Burkina Faso: challenges of a collective commitment for its implementation”. This choice highlights the need for coordinated action among state institutions, communities, and partners for an effective response.

In his speech, the Permanent Secretary of the CNLD, Emanoël KABORÉ, presented a report on the actions carried out in 2024. A total of 133.74 tonnes of drugs were seized across the country, while 522 individuals were brought before the courts. In addition, more than 89,000 people received awareness-raising education, 2,599 individuals—mainly young people—were provided with care, and 186 were reintegrated into society following support.

Commander OUEDRAOGO praised the efforts of the defense and security forces, community, religious and traditional leaders, as well as civil society and the media, all mobilized against this scourge. He reminded everyone that only sustained and collective mobilization will make it possible to curb the destructive effects of drugs in Burkinabe society in the long term.

The ceremony featured awareness activities, including a press conference, a theatrical performance, and the presentation of certificates of recognition to key actors engaged in the fight.

World Drug Day, celebrated every 26 June, calls on nations to invest more in prevention through social justice, education, health, and economic alternatives—foundations of a resilient society.
