Burkina Faso: Stade of 4-Août approved after 4-year suspension

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) lifted the suspension of the Stade of 4-Août, Burkina Faso’s flagship sports venue, on Tuesday, July 1, 2025.

The Ministry of Sports announced that the African football governing body has officially lifted the suspension of the iconic Stade du 4-Août.

This decision ends four years of closure for renovations and declares the facility fit once again to host major international competitions, including matches of the national team, the Étalons.

The reopening of the legendary Stade of 4-Août comes within the timeline set by the Minister of Sports, Roland Somda, who had targeted June 2025 for completion.

The Étalons will now be able to host Egypt in this renovated stadium in September 2025 for a crucial 2026 World Cup qualifying match.

Returning to the 4-Août represents a major advantage for the Burkinabe team. The stadium is renowned as an impregnable fortress. The Étalons have not suffered a single defeat there since June 20, 2009 — their last home loss, against Côte d’Ivoire (2-3) in the 2010 World Cup qualifiers.
