Togo: Port of Lomé, a strategic hub for strengthening economic ties between Lomé and Washington

As part of efforts to strengthen economic cooperation, U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Richard Michaels paid a visit to the Port of Lomé. This visit reflects a desire to continue trade relations despite a commercial context marked by new customs challenges. Through this move, Washington aims to sustain and boost its exchanges with West Africa, positioning Togo at the heart of its regional strategy.

The Port of Lomé, known for its competitiveness and deep-water access, is emerging as an attractive gateway for American companies seeking new African markets.

This international recognition—affirmed by U.S. diplomatic interest—is the result of a series of structural reforms undertaken by Togolese authorities in recent years. Transparency, infrastructure modernization, and an improved business climate have helped reposition the country as a major commercial hub.

The U.S. initiative also takes on added strategic importance amid a trade tariff revision introduced by the Trump administration. This move presents an opportunity to preserve the gains of past cooperation while opening new prospects for industrial projects like the Adétikopé Industrial Platform, which seeks to broaden its partnerships.

Through its port platform, Lomé is establishing itself as a strong bridge between Africa and America.
