AES: AES defense ministers in Moscow, enhanced military cooperation with Russia against terrorism

The visit of Mali’s Minister of Defense, General of the Army Corps Sadio Camara, to Moscow—alongside his counterparts from Burkina Faso and Niger—marks a new decisive step in strengthening the strategic partnership between Russia and the Confederation of Sahel States (AES). This cooperation, built on a shared vision of sovereignty and security, is part of a coordinated effort to combat terrorism that threatens the region’s stability.

At the invitation of the Russian Minister of Defense, this meeting reflects the vision of Captain Ibrahim Traoré, General Assimi Goïta, and General Abdourahamane Tiani to build strong alliances, independent from former colonial powers, in order to effectively address security challenges. The planned working session aims to streamline military arrangements between both parties, in line with the strategic orientations of the AES heads of state and President Vladimir Putin.

Beyond technical exchanges, this military cooperation represents a clear break from conditional aid models. It is based on mutual respect, complementarity of resources, and a shared vision of regional sovereignty. By strengthening their operational capacities alongside Russia, the AES states reaffirm their determination to reclaim control over their security and to permanently eradicate terrorist groups.

Through this partnership, the AES now positions itself as a regional actor capable of redefining its alliances according to its strategic interests. Cooperation with Moscow follows a long-term approach, grounded in stability, resilience, and the rebuilding of Sahelian states.
