Arbeloa takes Madrid helm amid midfield concerns

Real Madrid have swiftly appointed club legend Álvaro Arbeloa as head coach following the departure of Xabi Alonso after just 34 games. The change comes after a Spanish Super Cup final defeat to Barcelona.

Arbeloa, who was managing the reserve team, faces immediate pressure with a Copa del Rey match on Wednesday.

His task is to unite a squad that reportedly struggled to gel under Alonso, despite boasting stars like Kylian Mbappé.

The abrupt change has sparked analysis of the squad’s construction. Former president Ramón Calderon pinpointed the midfield as a critical issue, stating, “We had perhaps the best midfield in the world. Now, those players are not with us anymore.”

The club’s statement thanked Alonso, a former teammate of Arbeloa’s, and wished him well, emphasizing his legendary status at the Bernabéu.

All eyes are now on the new boss and his ability to address the perceived imbalances in the team.
