Togo unveils new national strategy to engage its diaspora

Togo has renewed its commitment to structuring the economic contribution of its nationals living abroad. Authorities meeting in Lomé have approved a new national strategy for diaspora mobilisation and engagement, marking a significant step more than a decade after the country’s first roadmap on the matter.

The initiative aims to better harness a potential often considered substantial but still underutilised.

By seeking to channel the skills, investments, and networks of Togolese abroad, the government intends to make the diaspora a genuine driver of economic and social development.

The strategic document was developed with support from international partners, including the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the African Development Bank (AfDB).

This collaboration reflects the importance placed on a structured approach aligned with best practices in diaspora mobilisation.

Part of the SDE4R project framework, the strategy emphasises stimulating private investment and supporting entrepreneurship.

The goal is to create a favourable environment enabling diaspora members to actively participate in the economic transformation of the country while strengthening its resilience to current challenges.

With this new direction, Togo aims to shift from dispersed mobilisation to a more coordinated and effective dynamic.

The success of the strategy , however, will depend on concrete implementation, particularly the ability of the institution to build trust and offer incentive mechanisms tailored to the diaspora’s expectations.
