Afreximbank intensifies commitment to Togo’s industrial development

The African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) intends to step up its commitment to the industrial development of Togo. This determination was reaffirmed during a meeting held on Tuesday, May 18, 2026, in Lomé between Togo’s President Faure Gnassingbé and the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Pan-African financial institution, Dr. George Elombi.

Already a partner of Togo in several major projects, Afreximbank now wishes to expand its involvement to new strategic sectors, including phosphates and energy production to support industrial zones.

The stated goal is to contribute further to the local transformation of raw materials and the creation of added value on the African continent.

According to Dr. George Elombi, discussions with Togolese authorities focused on mechanisms for generating wealth through the processing of the country’s natural resources.

“We held discussions on the transformation of Togolese commodities, particularly phosphates, as well as on energy production to support the development of industrial zones,” he explained.

The pan-African banking institution also aims to assist the Togolese government in mobilizing financing and technical partners to support the implementation of the industrial policies of the country.

This strategy seeks to strengthen the competitiveness  of Togo and foster industrialization capable of generating jobs and stimulating economic growth.

Afreximbank already plays an important role in financing several projects in Togo.

The bank is notably involved, alongside other financial partners, in the development of the Adétikopé Industrial Platform (PIA), considered one of the country’s main industrial hubs.

The institution has also distinguished itself in the media and sports sectors. In 2024, it facilitated €245 million in financing (approximately 160 billion CFA francs) for the Togolese audiovisual group New World Television (NWTV).

This financing was intended for the acquisition of broadcasting rights for major sporting competitions across Africa.
