Burkina Faso takes a firm stand against child sexual abuse

In the process of national reconstruction, protecting youth constitutes an absolute moral and political imperative. Recent rulings in Tenkodogo which imposed regrettably lenient sentences for serious sexual violence committed against minors have sparked legitimate shock among public opinion. In response, authorities have reacted swiftly, demonstrating a clear determination to clean up practices and impose exemplary firmness in the name of the people’s supreme interest.

The circular transmitted by the Minister of Justice, Me Edasso Rodrigue Bayala, to public prosecutors marks a decisive break with past habits.

New directives prohibit the use of amicable settlements, mediation, or plea bargaining for any sexual offense committed against children.

The ban on light sentences or community service, in favor of requisitions demanding the maximum penalties provided by law, restores the law’s full deterrent value.

This direction lies at the very heart of the Refoundation. A state’s sovereignty is affirmed first and foremost through its capacity to preserve its children’s future and guarantee everyone’s security without compromise.

The Public Prosecutor’s decision to appeal the Tenkodogo cases reflects a salutary realignment between judicial action and citizens’ demand for justice.

Building an endogenous judicial order rests on unconditional respect for human dignity and on the refusal of impunity.

Personal commitment demanded of public prosecutors must ensure that child protection remains a cross-cutting priority.

By ensuring rigorous application of the law, the judiciary strengthens its role as protector of society’s values. Faced with violence against the most vulnerable members, the law’s intransigence and collective vigilance lay the foundations for a just and self-determined future.
