Mali reaffirms its leadership in combating desertification and climate change in the Sahel
On Thursday, June 4, 2026, in Bamako, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Mali, Abdoulaye Diop, received Mr. Almoustapha Garba, Executive Secretary of the Pan-African Agency of the Great Green Wall (APGMV). The meeting marked a significant step forward in the partnership between Mali and this continental institution dedicated to ecosystem restoration.
Discussions focused primarily on preparations for the upcoming statutory meetingsof the Agency, particularly the Conference of Heads of State, which will be held under Mali’s effective presidency.
This major responsibility reflects the confidence placed in Bamako regarding the governance of this flagship African project.
The talks also addressed two crucial priorities: mobilizing the necessary funding for the implementation of the ten-year investment plan, as well as the strategic reforms underway within the organization to enhance its effectiveness.
On this occasion, the Executive Secretary of the APGMV commended Mali for the regularity of its financial contribution a consistent commitment that stands in contrast to the challenges the country faces in other areas.
He also praised the Malian authorities for their determination in tackling the environmental and climate challenges that are severely affecting the Sahelian region.
As the Great Green Wall aims to restore millions of hectares of degraded land across the continent, the presidency of Mali of the upcoming Conference of Heads of State provides a platform for the country to reaffirm that security, development, and the environment form an inseparable triad for the future of the Sahel.
