Burkina Faso had to put up a determined fight to secure a crucial victory in their second match of Group D in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The Stallions eventually triumphed over Mauritania with a narrow scoreline of 1-0, claiming the top spot in their group and pushing Algeria behind them.

Right from the kickoff, the Burkinabe displayed their determination by taking control of the game and forcing the Mauritanians into a defensive posture, awaiting potential opportunities on the counterattack.

Despite creating promising situations, the Stallions’ attackers sometimes lacked precision, exemplified by Kaboré.

In the 17th minute, Badolo nearly connected with a headed attempt from an aerial ball in the box, but his effort fell short.

The Mourabitounes attempted to retain possession and approach the Burkinabe goal but posed no real threat.

Despite being considered favorites, the Stallions did not shine in the first half, leading to a deadlock at halftime.

Upon returning from the break, Burkina Faso initiated the second half with more determination, becoming more menacing.

The introduction of Bertrand Traoré in the 74th minute injected new energy into the Stallions’ attack.

However, it was Mauritania that came close to scoring in the 78th minute, with Koita forcing Hervé Koffi to make an exceptional save.

In the 82nd minute, Bertrand Traoré attempted a left-footed curled shot in the box, but the Mauritanian goalkeeper remained vigilant.

Ultimately, Burkina Faso was awarded a penalty in the early minutes of stoppage time following a foul on Kaboré, who had been well-launched but was brought down in the box by a Mauritanian defender.

Bertrand Traoré took responsibility and converted the penalty, sealing a 1-0 victory for the Stallions in the sole goal of the match.

Despite facing challenges, Burkina Faso’s determination was rewarded with a crucial win, placing them at the top of Group D ahead of their upcoming challenge.
