Sudan: Tasis turns to regional resources to rebuild the economy

Sudan’s ongoing war has severely disrupted economic activity across the country. Trade routes have been interrupted, markets have weakened and many communities are struggling to access essential goods. In response, the Peace and Unity Government, known as Tasis, is seeking to revive local economies by using regional resources and strengthening commercial networks.

The Ministry of Trade has opened discussions with authorities in Kordofan to identify ways to improve economic activity. Led by Minister Mohamed Ismail Abdullah Ismail, the initiative focuses on organizing local production and creating stronger links between producers and markets.

Kordofan has valuable resources that could support economic recovery. These include gum arabic, livestock, cotton and gold. The authorities want to develop these sectors and ensure that local communities gain greater benefits from their region’s economic potential.

At the same time, the government is working to improve trade services and facilitate the movement of goods. Its plans include addressing smuggling, protecting consumers and creating better conditions for small traders.

Another key objective is to strengthen local participation in economic decisions. By involving regional authorities, Tasis aims to adapt its policies to the specific needs of communities affected by the conflict.

This initiative forms part of a wider plan to reorganize economic activity in areas under Tasis control. The government seeks to establish functioning regional markets that can support production, improve trade and respond to the needs of local populations.

However, the project faces significant difficulties. Continued fighting, damaged infrastructure and limited international recognition remain major obstacles to economic development. These challenges could complicate efforts to establish stable trade networks.

Despite these constraints, Tasis is placing regional resources at the center of its economic strategy. By strengthening local production and improving access to markets, the government seeks to create new opportunities for communities and contribute to the reconstruction of Sudan’s economy.
