Ivory Coast’s disastrous defeat puts AFCON 2023 qualification in jeopardy

In a shocking turn of events in Ivory Coast, Group A of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) has delivered a devastating blow to the Ivorian team. Despite high expectations, the Elephants once again faced defeat in front of their home crowd, while Nigeria secured a victory.

The Ivory Coast’s total disappointment unfolded in a crucial match against Equatorial Guinea, where they needed a win to secure qualification for the Round of 16.

The Elephants started the game strongly, dominating the first half with numerous chances but failing to convert them.

However, the Equatorial Guinean team capitalized on their only significant opportunity, as Carlos Akapo set up Emilio Nsue to calmly open the scoring with a low cross-shot (0-1, 42′).

Despite the Ivorians’ efforts, an equalizing goal by Ibrahim Sangaré was disallowed due to an offside position, leaving them trailing 0-1 at halftime.

The second half mirrored the first, with Ivory Coast maintaining dominance but struggling to find the net.

Despite multiple opportunities, including a missed one-on-one by Christian Kouamé (58′), the Elephants remained inefficient.

Jean-Phillipe Krasso appeared to have leveled the score, but another offside decision annulled the goal (68′).

To compound Ivory Coast’s woes, Equatorial Guinea extended their lead with a superb free-kick from Pablo Ganet (0-2, 73′) and a counter-attack finished by Emilio Nsue (0-3, 73′).

In the closing moments, Nzalang Nacional added a fourth goal through Jannick Buyla (0-4, 88′). Overwhelmed, Ivory Coast suffered a heavy defeat, putting their qualification hopes in jeopardy.
