Hervé Renard emerges as contender for Cameroon’s National Football team Coaching role

Samuel Eto’o has confirmed Rigobert Song’s departure as the Cameroon national football team coach and has set his sights on Hervé Renard as a potential successor. After a disappointing performance in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where Cameroon was eliminated by Nigeria in the round of 16, Eto’o, the president of the Cameroonian Football Federation, sees Renard as the ideal candidate for future challenges.

Currently leading the French women’s national team, Renard is highly regarded in Africa.

Following recent interest from Ivory Coast, Cameroon now considers recruiting him.

With a desire for an experienced coach familiar with the continent, Renard, who has previously won two AFCON titles with Zambia (2012) and Ivory Coast (2015), seems to fit the bill.

Eto’o expressed his hopes that Renard would be interested in coaching «the best African national team» in an interview with France 24.

Eto’o emphasized that the final decision does not solely depend on him but involves input from Paul Biya, the President of Cameroon.

 The federation will propose several coaching profiles, and Biya’s approval is crucial, as Eto’o explained, «In our country, it requires the agreement and opinion of the head of state, upon the proposal of the Cameroonian federation».

Eto’o concluded by stating, «We hope that one of the three profiles we propose will catch the attention of the foremost Cameroonian sports figure».
