AES: The joint counter-terrorism force has already been activated on the ground, even before it becomes operational, as announced by the Armed Forces Chiefs of Staff

While the specifics and size of the joint counter-terrorism force within the AES (Alliance of Sahel States) are still in the process of definition, the collaborative efforts on the ground are already making a tangible impact.

A clear example is the air support provided by the Nigerien army to their Malian counterparts during the recent terrorist attack on the Labezzanga border post.

This coordinated response effectively foiled the attack, showcasing the strength of unified action.

As the operationalization of the joint AES force approaches, marked by a recent meeting of the Chiefs of Staff of the Armies of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger in Niamey, the leaders of the AES are entering a crucial phase in the fight against terrorism.

This signifies a significant stride taken by the Sahelian trio in collectively defending their national territories and represents a noteworthy advancement in reclaiming territories and combating transborder criminal activities.

General Moussa Salaou Barmou, the Chief of Staff of Niger, emphasizes that this development reflects the shared vision of Presidents Ibrahim Traoré, Assimi Goïta, and Abdourahamane Tiani, illustrating their commitment to continuous cooperation to address security challenges and create conditions conducive to the growth and prosperity of the AES and its people.

Furthermore, the objective is to not only facilitate the integration of the peoples but also to «guarantee real sovereignty and preserve the dignity of the AES within the international community».

This collaborative effort is poised to bring about a transformative impact, heralding a decisive end to terrorism in the three countries of the AES.
