Niger: Imminent creation of a joint armed force to fight terrorism in the Sahel

During their inaugural meeting in Niamey on March 6, 2024, the Chiefs of Staff of the Sahel States Alliance (AES) announced the imminent establishment of a joint armed force to combat terrorism.

General Moussa Salaou Barmou, Chief of Staff of the Niger Armed Forces, communicated this decision at the conclusion of the deliberations, emphasizing an operational concept aligned with the defense and security objectives set by the member states of the Alliance.

General Barmou commended the quality of discussions, highlighting the significant interest in security and defense throughout the Alliance region.

Military leaders also took the opportunity to assess the regional security situation during this meeting, acknowledging ongoing concerns but noting signs of improvement due to renewed dynamics in joint operations among the three member countries.

They are confident that by combining their efforts, they can establish a secure environment, thereby meeting the peace and stability aspirations of their populations.

General Barmou confirmed the forthcoming establishment of a joint armed force within the Sahel States Alliance to address the region’s security challenges.

He reiterated that this alliance, formed in September 2023, includes Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger.
