Impressive Retegui brace secures Italy’s 2-1 victory over Venezuela in friendly clash

Italy claimed a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Venezuela in a friendly encounter held at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale. Mateo Retegui emerged as the hero for Italy, scoring a crucial brace to secure the win.

Despite Venezuela never having faced Italy before, they had previous encounters with European teams in 2022, recording a win against Malta and a defeat to Iceland.

On the other hand, Italy is gearing up for Euro 2024 in Germany, where they aim to defend their title.

Under the guidance of coach Luciano Spalletti, Italy has been in fine form, registering six wins in the qualifiers with just one loss.

The match kicked off with drama early on as Venezuela was awarded a penalty in the 2nd minute after Alessandro Bongiorno committed a foul in the box.

However, Italy’s goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma came to the rescue, denying Jose Rondon’s spot-kick.

Italy’s Federico Chiesa came close to opening the scoring in the 14th minute, but his effort went wide of the mark.

Venezuela also had their chances, notably in the 19th minute, but failed to convert.

It was Italy who broke the deadlock in the 40th minute when they capitalized on a defensive error by Venezuela.

A quick recovery in the box saw Retegui receiving the ball from Cambiaso and clinically finishing to give Italy the lead.

However, Venezuela responded swiftly, equalizing just three minutes later. A poor pass from Donnarumma to Bonaventura was intercepted, allowing Darwin Machís to capitalize and level the score.

After the halftime break, Italy asserted their dominance, with Retegui completing his brace in the 80th minute to seal the victory for his team.

Despite Venezuela’s efforts to find an equalizer, Italy held on to claim the win.

Overall, it was a closely contested match with both teams showing glimpses of quality.

Italy’s victory serves as a confidence booster as they continue their preparations for Euro 2024, while Venezuela will look to learn from this experience and improve in future fixtures.
