Hugo Ekitike confirmed his choice regarding his sporting nationality

The player linked with PSG has been in the spotlight regarding his choice of sporting nationality. Hugo Ekitike, of French-Cameroonian heritage, had the option to represent either France or Cameroon in international football. Amid swirling rumors, Ekitike has finally broken his silence on the matter.

The issue of dual-nationality players in national teams has always been contentious, with Cameroon struggling to secure commitments from some of its top talents in recent years.

The newly appointed coach of the Cameroonian national team, Marc Brys, had discussions with various players during a European tour in late April, including those with dual-nationality.

Following these talks, Brys announced Hugo Ekitike’s decision not to join the Indomitable Lions, opting instead to pursue his dream of playing for France under Didier Deschamps.

However, this announcement was later contradicted by Ekitike’s agent, who clarified that the player had not made any statements to either the Lions’ coach or the media regarding his national team choice.

This conflicting information has left room for speculation, especially as Ekitike, currently on loan at Eintracht Frankfurt from PSG, has been in excellent form recently.

His agent’s remarks have reignited hopes among Cameroonians of seeing Ekitike don the national team jersey.

Despite the clarity from Brys’ camp and Ekitike’s, the situation remains open to interpretation, highlighting the need for direct clarification from the player himself.

In a recent interview with Bild, Ekitike confirmed his desire to represent France, acknowledging that his immediate selection for Euro 2024 is unlikely but expressing optimism about his prospects if he continues to excel at Frankfurt.

This statement provides clarity on Ekitike’s stance, bringing closure to the debate surrounding his international allegiance.
