Senegal: Bassirou Diomaye Faye on an official visit to Bamako

Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye landed in Bamako on Thursday 30 May 202, as part of a friendship and working visit. He was welcomed off the plane at President Modibo Keita-Sénou International Airport by his Malian counterpart, Assimi Goïta.

The Senegalese head of state, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, is on a friendly working visit to the Malian capital of Bamako, accompanied by a large government delegation.

Bassirou Diomaye Faye is accompanied by a large delegation comprising the Minister for African Integration and Foreign Affairs, Yacine Fall, General Birame Diop, Minister for the Armed Forces, Birame Souleye Diop, Minister for Energy, Oil and Mines, and Malick Ndiaye, Minister for Infrastructure, Land and Air Transport, according to the Malian Presidency’s communications department.

“The aim of this visit is to strengthen the historic ties of good neighbourliness, fraternal friendship, solidarity and multifaceted cooperation between the two nations”, the press release said.

On the agenda for discussion between the two personalities will be the situation in the sub-region.

During his recent trips to Côte d’Ivoire and Nigeria, his counterparts from the sub-regional organisation Ecowas encouraged him to discuss with the heads of state of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) a return to Ecowas.

Since his presidential campaign, he had pledged to work to preserve the unity of Ecowas.

After Bamako, Bassirou Diomaye Faye will continue his trip this afternoon to Ouagadougou to meet the President of the Transition, Captain Ibrahim Traoré.

This is Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s first official visit to Mali and Burkina Faso.

He has already made several other visits to Mauritania, Gambia, Côte d’Ivoire and Nigeria. President Faye and his Prime Minister Sonko want to strengthen the ties of partnership between the states.
