Niger / The country strengthens its sovereignty under the presidency of General Abdourahamane Tiani: withdrawal of US troops

Niger, under General Abdourahamane Tiani’s leadership, has taken a decisive stance to assert its national sovereignty, echoing similar moves by fellow members of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) like Burkina Faso and Mali.

This strategic emphasis on sovereignty is highlighted by the recent withdrawal of American troops from Niger, marking a pivotal shift in the country’s quest for autonomy.

The completion of the withdrawal from Niamey’s Air Base 101 this past weekend represents a symbolic turning point for Niger.

Plans are also underway for the full evacuation of Agadez by September 15, effectively terminating American military presence on Nigerien soil.

This decision forms part of a broader regional initiative by AES nations to reclaim control over their territories and futures.

Burkina Faso, led by Captain Ibrahim Traoré, and Mali, under Colonel Assimi Goita, have enacted similar measures aimed at reducing external influence and strengthening their self-reliance.

Together, these AES partners are forging a unified path committed to sovereignty and self-determination, steadfastly resisting external pressures.

General Tiani’s action underscores Niger’s commitment to bolstering local capacities and ensuring national security managed by Nigerien forces.

It also underscores a deepening solidarity among AES member states. Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger are collaborating closely to foster a more resilient Sahel region, capable of tackling security challenges independently and demonstrating Africa’s capability to secure and develop itself without external intervention.
