Tensions rise between FC Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao over Nico Williams transfer

The pursuit of Nico Williams by FC Barcelona has sparked significant tensions with Athletic Bilbao.

The Basque club publicly criticized Barcelona, expressing their displeasure with the Catalan club’s interest in their young winger.

Nico Williams is a top target for Barcelona this summer, with Catalan media reporting that the club has prioritized his acquisition.

When asked about the situation, Barcelona’s president Joan Laporta made a statement on Catalunya Radio that angered Bilbao.

He mentioned that Barcelona is currently capable of handling a transfer operation like that of Nico Williams.

Athletic Bilbao’s President, Jon Uriarte, held a press conference on Thursday to condemn Barcelona’s approach.

He criticized the excessive scrutiny Williams has faced regarding his future, despite being focused on the Euro with the Spanish national team.

Uriarte emphasized that Athletic Bilbao values respect among football entities and does not subject players under contract elsewhere to public pressure for recruitment.

He highlighted Bilbao’s commitment to an ambitious project, citing recent contract renewals for Unai Simón and Vivian as evidence.

Despite Nico Williams extending his contract with Bilbao until 2027, Barcelona sees an opportunity in his €58 million release clause.

While Catalan media suggest an agreement between Williams and Barcelona, Laporta and his team still need to negotiate with Athletic Bilbao, a task that now appears particularly challenging due to the recent tensions.

Whether these tensions will ease remains to be seen.
