Mali: Prime Minister Sonko reiterates the fraternal relationship between his country and the AES

On August 12, Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko made a significant visit to Mali, underscoring the importance of regional solidarity amid ongoing tensions.

His trip to Bamako, which included a formal meeting with Malian Prime Minister Choguel Maïga and discussions with President Assimi Goïta, was intended to reinforce Senegal’s commitment to strong ties with its Sahelian neighbors.

During his visit, Sonko paid tribute to the Malian soldiers who fell in the clashes at Tinzaouatène from July 25 to 27, highlighting Senegal’s support for Mali as it faces serious security challenges.

This act of solidarity comes at a time when there have been rumors about Senegal’s stance on the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).

Sonko used the visit to reaffirm Senegal’s foreign policy position, clearly opposing the embargo placed on Mali following the 2020 coup.

He emphasized that Senegal, under his leadership, would never endorse actions that destabilize a fellow nation or enforce unjust sanctions.

The diplomatic gesture by Sonko is seen as pivotal in clearing up misunderstandings, particularly following the release of a video by the Ukrainian embassy in Senegal depicting the deadly attack at Tinzaouatène.

This attack was purportedly linked to Ukrainian intelligence support, and possibly NATO involvement.

By reaffirming Senegal’s commitment to Sahelian solidarity, Sonko aims to project Senegal as a steadfast partner in regional stability.

This visit is poised to strengthen bilateral relations between Dakar and Bamako and to enhance cooperation within the AES amid escalating security concerns.
