Togo – Niger: A closer relationship under the transition of General Abdourahamane Tiani

Since General Abdourahamane Tiani took power in Niger in July 2023, followed by ECOWAS sanctions, the dynamics between Niger and Togo have entered a new phase.

Under the leadership of President Faure Gnassingbé, Togo has opted for a unique approach in West Africa, aligning more closely with the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).

A recent meeting between President Faure Gnassingbé and a Nigerien ministerial delegation, led by Colonel Garba Hakimi, Niger’s Minister of Public Health, Population, and Social Affairs, highlights this shift.

The delegation brought a message of fraternity from General Tiani, emphasizing the need for solidarity between the two nations during Niger’s transitional period.

This emerging strategic partnership is built on strong political foundations. Togo has shown explicit support for Niger’s transition, respecting its sovereignty and avoiding direct interference.

This support aligns with a broader vision of regional cooperation, addressing shared security and economic challenges.

Niger and Togo share significant mutual interests, particularly in energy, infrastructure, and trade. The Port of Lomé in Togo is a crucial gateway for Nigerien goods, and under Niger’s current transition, economic cooperation could deepen, with joint projects aimed at boosting trade and developing cross-border infrastructure.

Diplomatically, Togo has managed to strike a balance between maintaining relations with Western powers and strengthening ties with AES countries.

This foreign policy approach demonstrates Togo’s ability to navigate a complex geopolitical landscape while solidifying its connections with its Sahelian neighbors.

The meeting on August 12, 2024, marks a pivotal moment in the deepening relationship between Togo and Niger. It not only underscores enhanced bilateral cooperation but also reflects a shared commitment to addressing common challenges in a region fraught with instability.
