Nigeria/ Fuel tanker crash claims 48 lives

A devastating collision between a fuel tanker and a lorry transporting passengers and livestock has left at least 48 people dead in Niger State, central Nigeria, the national disaster agency has confirmed.

 

The incident occurred early Sunday morning around 00:30 local time (23:30 GMT Saturday). The collision triggered a powerful explosion, engulfing both vehicles in flames, according to the Niger State Emergency Management Agency.

 

Rescue efforts and scene of the accident

Abdullahi Baba-arah, Director-General of the emergency agency, said that rescue teams were quickly dispatched to the site to contain the fire and recover victims. Several other vehicles were also affected by the explosion.

 

Footage from the scene shows the charred remains of the vehicles and dead livestock scattered around. Emergency workers are continuing efforts to recover bodies and clear the wreckage, with several animals still trapped inside the burnt-out vehicles.

 

Community Response and Condolences

 

A mass burial for the victims is currently underway, state media reported. Niger State Governor Umaru Bago expressed his deep sorrow over the tragedy, offering condolences to the families of those who lost their lives.

 

Fuel tanker accidents remain a common occurrence in Nigeria, often exacerbated by deteriorating road conditions and unsafe transportation practices.
