Burkina Faso : Prime Minister calls on journalists to contribute to the country’s development

The Prime Minister of Burkina Faso, Dr. Apollinaire Joachimson Kyélem de Tambèla, emphasized the crucial role of journalists in nation-building during a meeting with the President of the Superior Council of Communication (CSC), Wendingoudi Louis Modeste Ouédraogo, on September 17, 2024. He encouraged the media to work towards national development, stating that journalism should not be limited to sterile criticism but should actively contribute to the progress of Burkina Faso.

During the meeting, the Prime Minister stressed the importance of regulating information in the national interest, taking into account local realities and global challenges such as social media. He compared Burkina Faso to countries like Iran and China, where, despite restrictions on press freedom, significant developmental progress has been made through discipline and strict control of information.

Dr. Kyélem Tambèla reminded that blindly adopting Western ideals, such as press freedom, may not necessarily suit Burkina Faso’s needs. He urged journalists to act responsibly by focusing their work on building the nation, rather than following foreign models.

This meeting signifies a strong commitment between the government and the CSC to strengthen communication regulation in Burkina Faso, while ensuring that the nation’s interests remain at the heart of this mission.
