Carabao Cup: Manchester City knocked out of by Tottenham

Manchester City suffered a 2-1 defeat to Tottenham in the Carabao Cup Round of 16, extending their disappointing run in a competition they once dominated. After winning the trophy six times between 2013 and 2021, the Citizens have now faced elimination for the fourth consecutive season.

Pep Guardiola, consistent with his cup rotation policy, fielded a changed side without key players including Haaland, Kovacic, and Bernardo Silva.

The Skyblues quickly found themselves behind after Werner scored (5′), followed by a goal from Pape Matar Sarr (25′). Despite Nunes pulling one back just before halftime (45+4′), City failed to turn the tide in the second period.

This defeat, City’s first of the season, highlights the challenge of managing a packed schedule of 75-80 matches per year across all competitions.

Their recent Carabao Cup exits (West Ham in 2022, Southampton in 2023, Newcastle in 2024) suggest the competition has become a lower priority for the Manchester club, which appears to be focusing its resources on more prestigious objectives.

Tottenham advance to the quarter-finals, having executed their game plan effectively despite losing van de Ven to injury early in the match.
