Togo: A strategic partnership to boost the rice industry

As part of the 19th Lomé International Fair, the Togolese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI-Togo) and the Interprofessional Council of the Rice Sector entered into a landmark agreement on Wednesday, November 27, 2024. This partnership marks the launch of the Togolese Rice Promotion Support Project (PAVRIT), aiming to elevate the local rice industry.

The initiative is designed to enhance the competitiveness of Togolese rice against imported varieties. A key component is a robust communication campaign to boost the visibility of locally produced rice and shift consumer preferences.

“Our goal is to demonstrate that Togolese rice can match imported rice in quality,” said Krystel Dicoh, the project coordinator.

To empower producers, the CCI-Togo plans to offer subsidies to lower production costs, ultimately making local rice more affordable for consumers. This measure seeks to stimulate demand and increase market share for Togolese rice.

Beyond promotional efforts, PAVRIT addresses critical structural challenges within the value chain. Consultations with processors are scheduled to identify specific needs and obstacles, while a comprehensive study of the sector will provide actionable recommendations to enhance organization and efficiency.

Karine Adotevi Edoh, Director General of CCI-Togo, hailed the agreement as a milestone for Togolese agriculture. She emphasized the institution’s commitment to supporting local businesses and promoting “Made in Togo” products.

Through this collaboration, CCI-Togo and the rice sector aim to drive transformative change, fostering increased local production, bolstering food security, and strengthening the national economy.
