Burkina Faso: The government commits to restoring order and discipline in markets

In contrast to politicians seeking votes, the Transition led by Captain Ibrahim Traoré in Burkina Faso aims to restore order and discipline in markets and in local popular markets called “yaars” as well. Prime Minister Apollinaire Joachim Kyélem de Tambèla, during the opening of the General States of Markets and Yaars under the theme: «Management and Exploitation of Market Infrastructures in Burkina Faso: Current Situation and Perspectives», stated that the goal of his government is to end speculation and track down traders violating the rules.

According to the Prime Minister, responsibilities lie with authorities, municipalities, presidents of special delegations, and the Ministry of Territorial Administration, all responsible for maintaining order, discipline, and the management of markets and yards.

He emphasized that the current disorder also stems from the influence of politicians who mobilize their supporters to gain votes, subsidies, and funding for their party.

Prime Minister Apollinaire Joachim Kyélem de Tambèla assured that the Transition would act independently, not being affiliated with political parties.

Strict measures will be taken, including legal action against traders engaging in speculation and renting their stalls at excessive prices.

The General States aim to address the issues hindering the proper functioning of markets and yaars.

On his part, the Minister in charge of Commerce, Serge Gnaniodem Poda, highlighted that discipline is not respected in these economic spaces, with prohibited products being stored.

The General States provide a platform for holistic discussions aimed at addressing the concerns and constraints affecting these market infrastructures.

The decision to organize these General States was made during a meeting between traders and President Ibrahim Traoré on September 11th.
