Africa: Abdourahamane Tiani visits Assimi Goïta to strengthen relations between Niger and Mali
General Abdourahamane Tiani, President of the National Council for the Safeguarding of the Homeland, met his Malian counterpart Assimi Goïta in Bamako on Thursday 23 November and thanked him for his support.
General Tiani’s visit to Mali is part of a drive to strengthen relations between the two countries, which are facing the same security challenges and are linked by the Alliance of Sahel States.
During talks between the two leaders, General Tiani thanked Mali for the support and determination of the Malian authorities and people to work alongside the authorities and people of Niger, whatever the obstacles.
Mali has expressed its opposition to any ECOWAS intervention in Niger.
General Abdourahamane Tiani recalled that Niger is facing an embargo, while denouncing certain ECOWAS member states that have chosen to deny Niger’s sovereignty, independence and ability to choose what is best for the people of Niger.
Mali and Burkina Faso were quick to show their solidarity with the Niamey generals after they took power.
Together they created an Alliance of Sahel States, which provides for stronger economic ties and mutual assistance in the event of an attack on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of one of the three states.
The summit of the Alliance of Sahel States is scheduled for 24 November 2023. The aim is to advance the implementation of this cooperation framework.
