Twists and Triumphs: Mauritania stuns Algeria, Angola prevails over Burkina Faso in AFCON 2023 Group D Showdown

On the third and final day of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, Algeria suffered a defeat against Mauritania, while Angola secured victory over Burkina Faso. These results sealed the fate of Group D in the competition. Mauritania managed to eliminate Algeria by winning their match 1-0.

A poorly cleared corner by the Algerian defense allowed Captain Dellahi to deceive goalkeeper Mandrea, giving the advantage to the Mourabitounes.

It was a major upset for Mauritania, leading at halftime and securing a spot in the round of 16.

This success is particularly noteworthy for a team that had never won a match in an AFCON. It marks a historic qualification for Mauritania.

On the other hand, Angola claimed the top spot in the group by defeating Burkina Faso (2-0).

Despite the Stallions dominating the first half, it was the Palancas Negras who took the lead with a single shot on target, scoring through an unstoppable header from Mabululu.

Burkina Faso’s efforts went unrewarded. In the second half, Angola added another goal, securing a 2-0 victory against Burkina Faso.
