José Peseiro Bids farewell to Nigeria’s Super Eagles After AFCON 2023 final loss

The partnership between José Peseiro and Nigeria has come to an end. The Portuguese coach announced his departure on Friday following the team’s failure in the 2023 AFCON final against Ivory Coast.

The 34th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations continues to have repercussions on the coaching front.

The list of coaches who haven’t survived the competition, whether through resignation or dismissal, keeps growing. This time, José Peseiro has joined the ranks.

Having served as the coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles since 2022, the 63-year-old tactician bids farewell to the reigning vice-champions of Africa.

Indeed, Peseiro’s contract with the Nigerian Football Federation expired on February 29, 2024, and it was not extended.

Following the conclusion of his contract, he announced the end of his mission at the helm of the Super Eagles.

«Yesterday, we concluded our contract with the NFF. It was a pride and an honor to coach the Super Eagles. It has been 22 months of immense dedication, sacrifices, emotions, and tremendous enthusiasm», he declared.

To recap, during Peseiro’s tenure with Nigeria, there were 23 matches played, resulting in 11 wins, 4 draws, and 8 losses.

The Super Eagles will now embark on the search for a new leader.
