DRC: Mpox, the promptness of Congolese Authorities in the face of the health crisis

In response to the alarming resurgence of the Mpox epidemic in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Congolese authorities, under the leadership of President Félix Tshisekedi, have once again demonstrated their ability to act swiftly to protect the population. The decision made on Thursday, August 22, 2024, to urgently allocate 10 million US dollars to bolster the fight against the virus is undeniable proof of the authorities’ commitment to containing this health crisis.

The meeting between President Tshisekedi and Dr. Jean Kaseya, Director of Africa CDC, marked a decisive turning point in the response to Mpox. Dr. Kaseya confirmed the imminent arrival of vaccines in the DRC, which will be administered primarily to those infected, their direct contacts, and individuals at risk. This coordinated action highlights the effectiveness of Congolese authorities in quickly mobilizing the necessary resources and collaborating with international partners to curb the spread of the virus.

Health Minister Dr. Roger Kamba reassured the population about the country’s capacity to tackle this epidemic. With a national contingency plan implemented by the National Institute of Public Health through the Public Health Emergency Response Center (CROUSP), the DRC is well-equipped to meet the challenges posed by Mpox. The minister also emphasized the importance of the country’s epidemiological expertise, which serves as a model for other nations.

However, the success of this fight also depends on the cooperation of the population. It is imperative that every citizen strictly follows the hygiene guidelines issued by health authorities. Regular hand washing, avoiding close contact with infected individuals, and getting vaccinated as soon as possible are simple yet essential measures to prevent the spread of the virus.

The speed and determination of the Congolese authorities are commendable, but this battle against Mpox cannot be won without the full commitment of the population. By adhering to health guidelines, every Congolese citizen contributes not only to protecting their own health but also to that of their community and the entire country.
