Niger steps up its fight against malaria: Large-scale mosquito control campaign launched in Niamey to protect public health

In a bid to protect public health, the Nigerien government is ramping up efforts to tackle mosquito-borne diseases with a large-scale anti-mosquito campaign in Niamey, starting this Monday.

The initiative targets the reduction of mosquito populations, particularly focusing on malaria, an endemic disease that thrives in areas where stagnant water accumulates during the rainy season.

With the arrival of the rainy season, Niamey faces a dual challenge. While the rains bring the promise of abundant harvests, they also increase the risk of seasonal diseases, particularly malaria.

To mitigate this threat, city officials are urging residents to take necessary precautions during the campaign, which will see teams spraying insecticides across the city each evening from 7 p.m. onward.

Citizens are advised to cover food and drinks to avoid contamination during the spraying process.

This mosquito eradication effort is part of a broader public health initiative designed to curb the spread of seasonal epidemics.

The Nigerien government is calling on residents to cooperate fully, stressing that preventive actions by individuals are crucial to the success of the campaign.

Niamey’s residents are expected to play a key role in supporting the authorities’ efforts.

By adhering to the guidelines and maintaining vigilance, the community can help significantly reduce malaria cases in the capital, ensuring a healthier environment for all.
