La Liga / Barcelona’s struggles highlight La Liga’s financial fair flay resolve
Barcelona’s efforts to secure Dani Olmo’s registration for the second half of the season have been dealt another blow, with a second court upholding La Liga’s wage cap restrictions just one day before the deadline.
The 26-year-old Spanish international, signed from RB Leipzig in August for €60 million (£51 million), has become a symbol of Barcelona’s ongoing financial struggles.
Initially registered for the first half of the season, Olmo’s status remains in limbo due to the club’s inability to meet strict budgetary limits imposed by La Liga.
Despite pursuing legal avenues, Barcelona’s appeals have been repeatedly dismissed.
La Liga’s Budget Validation Body, Financial Fair Play Committee, Social Appeals Committee, and UEFA Licensing Committee unanimously upheld the decision.
According to La Liga, the club failed to meet conditions for any precautionary measures.
This development underscores La Liga’s unwavering stance on financial discipline.
The league defended its budgetary controls as essential to maintaining fair competition, stating these regulations have long been accepted by all clubs, including Barcelona.
As the January transfer window looms, Barcelona is exploring alternative revenue streams, such as selling Camp Nou VIP boxes, to raise over €100 million. However, La Liga’s approval is still required.
Olmo, who scored six goals in 15 appearances this season and helped Spain win the European Championship, now faces an uncertain future, with Premier League clubs reportedly circling.
