Education/ Mali approves creation of two new universities in major education reform

The National Transitional Council (CNT) of Mali has unanimously approved legislation to establish new universities in Bandiagara and Kayes, marking a significant expansion of higher education access. The votes passed with overwhelming support (118 and 119 votes respectively, zero opposition).

Higher Education Minister Professor Bouréma Kansaye championed the initiative, which addresses both growing enrollment demands and regional educational disparities.

The move represents a strategic effort to decentralize academic opportunities and develop local expertise nationwide.

“This decision reflects our commitment to making education a national priority,” officials stated, highlighting the long-term impact in a country facing significant educational challenges.

The new institutions will serve as regional centers of excellence, providing more Malian youth with access to quality higher education close to home.

The universities are expected to help bridge the urban-rural education gap while strengthening Mali’s capacity to develop homegrown talent a crucial step in the nation’s development strategy.
