Niger: Tit for tat, Niamey restricts visa issuance to five European countries

Niger has taken a strong and symbolic decision in its migration policy. By restricting visa issuance locations for citizens of five European countries (Italy, the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, and the United Kingdom), the Nigerien authorities are sending a clear message: respect must be mutual.

This measure is not a closure but rather a logical response to a persistent injustice. For years, Nigeriens have faced significant challenges in obtaining European visas, often forced to travel to neighboring countries at their own expense to submit applications. The Nigerien government had proposed a simple and fair solution: to allow European visas to be issued in Niamey. However, this outstretched hand received no response.

In the face of this silence, Niamey has chosen to react firmly. By applying the principle of reciprocity, Niger is asserting its sovereignty and defending the dignity of its citizens. It is a way of stating that international relations must be built on respect and fairness. Niger is not asking for privileges but for fair recognition of its people.

This decision comes within a broader context where Sahel countries are re-evaluating their traditional partnerships, particularly in matters of security and migration. Niger is demonstrating that it is no longer willing to accept one-sided rules.
