2026 World Cup/ Saibari strikes early as Morocco edge Scotland to Keep knockout hopes alive

Morocco breathed life into their World Cup campaign with a 1-0 victory over Scotland, courtesy of the blistering opener of Ismael Sabari inside 72 seconds.

The forward, who also scored against Brazil in the group opener, latched onto delicate lofted pass of Brahim Diaz, slipped between two defenders, and fired past goalkeeper Angus Gunn into the top-left corner.

Scotland, who had beaten Haiti in their first match, pushed for an equalizer but lacked cutting edge.

The first-half stoppage-time cross of Andy Robertson found John McGinn at the back post, but the midfielder failed to connect.

Late penalty appeals for Scott McTominay were waved away after a tackle inside the box.

Morocco came close to doubling their lead when Bilal El Khannouss’s header forced a smart save from Gunn, but missed chances kept the game tense.

The Moroccan defense held firm as substitutes Lyndon Dykes and Napoli’s midfielder caused problems, but Scotland ran out of time.

A minute’s applause in the 76th minute honored Tartan Army fan Donny Strathie, who passed away in Boston earlier this week.

The result puts Morocco in a strong position to reach the knockout rounds for the second consecutive World Cup, while Scotland face a decisive final group match.
