Burkina Faso: Culture and diplomacy, a sovereignty also expressed through art

In a rebuilding Burkina Faso, where every sector is called upon to play its role in the national renewal, culture has now emerged as a strategic pillar of sovereignty. Through the art exhibition organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Cooperation, and Burkinabè Abroad on May 13 and 14, 2025, as part of the 3rd edition of the Month of Burkinabe Heritage, the country is asserting its ambition to make cultural diplomacy a driver of influence and development.

Held under the theme “Cultural Heritage and Economic Development,” this event is fully aligned with the vision of the President of the Transition, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, who sees cultural rootedness as an essential component of the national sovereignty project. By showcasing the creative talents of Burkinabe artists—from painting and sculpture to batik—this initiative celebrates a resilient people standing tall in the face of adversity, as highlighted by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré.

The decision to highlight culture before diplomats and international officials is no coincidence. It reflects Burkina Faso’s intention to engage with the world on its own terms, using its own symbols and cultural references. The Minister of Culture, Pendgdwendé Gilbert Ouédraogo, welcomed this platform showcasing national heritage, describing it as a sign of strengthened cultural cooperation.

By promoting a diplomacy rooted in national identity, Captain Ibrahim Traoré shows that sovereignty is not limited to politics or military strength. It is also expressed through culture—a foundation of peace, dialogue, and the proud affirmation of a standing, dignified Burkina Faso.
