Togo Launches national reforestation campaign to combat deforestation and preserve ecosystems

On Sunday, June 1, 2025, Togo officially launched its national reforestation campaign. Symbolically kicked off on Tree Day, the initiative is part of a broader effort to combat deforestation and protect the country’s ecosystems. In Lomé, the Minister of Environment and Forest Resources, Katari Foli-Bazi, presided over the ceremony, marking the start of a year-long commitment.

During this inaugural day, two million trees were planted nationwide, reflecting the scale of national mobilization. The Minister took the opportunity to reiterate the country’s goal: to plant one billion trees by 2030. The ambitious program also aims to increase forest cover to 26%, a challenge the Togolese government is determined to meet with the involvement of all stakeholders.

Katari Foli-Bazi emphasized the permanent nature of the initiative. “This is no longer a one-day action, but a continuous mobilization”, he stated, calling on citizens, local authorities, NGOs, and the private sector to sustain their efforts throughout the year. Reforestation is now positioned as a long-term civic duty, in response to growing environmental concerns.

June 1 also saw the participation of several government members and public figures, underscoring the political will to make reforestation a national priority. By combining institutional efforts with popular engagement, Togo aims to build a greener and more resilient future in the face of climate change.
