DRC / Togo: President Félix Tshisekedi receives emissary from H.E. Faure Gnassingbé after UN Security Council election

The President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Félix Tshisekedi, received Togolese Minister of Foreign Affairs, Robert Dussey, in an audience on Wednesday evening at the African Union City. This meeting took place in a positive diplomatic context, following the DRC’s recent election as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the 2026–2027 term.

The envoy of the President of the Council of Ministers of the Togolese Republic, His Excellency Faure Gnassingbé, personally delivered a message of congratulations to his Congolese counterpart. Togo praised this major diplomatic victory for the DRC, which strengthens its standing on the international stage and provides a strategic platform to advocate for Africa’s interests in matters of peace and security.

This election, which highlights the growing role of the DRC in international affairs, comes at a time of regional tensions and persistent security challenges in the eastern part of the country. The DRC’s presence on the UN Security Council is expected to enable it to more effectively push for reforms in the global security system, particularly to ensure better consideration of African realities.

The visit by Togo’s top diplomat also reflects the strengthening ties between Kinshasa and Lomé. In recent years, the two countries have intensified bilateral exchanges and demonstrated a shared commitment to deepening political and economic cooperation. This approach aligns with the vision of a more united and coordinated African diplomacy in response to global challenges.

In receiving this message of support, President Félix Tshisekedi reaffirmed his commitment to representing Africa’s voice during his term on the Security Council and to upholding the principles of peace, justice, and sovereignty.
