Niger: NGOs called upon to strengthen their role in national rebuilding

On the occasion of the 4th edition of the National Day of NGOs and Development Associations, celebrated on June 16, 2025, the government paid tribute to their vital contribution to nation-building. Held under the theme “The Contribution of NGOs to the Refoundation Process,” this day aims to strengthen their commitment to building a fairer and more united Niger.

NGOs are active in key sectors such as health, education, food security, the environment, and the empowerment of women and youth. Their number has grown from 60 in 1990 to over 4,000 in 2025, reflecting remarkable growth supported by the State. Between 2017 and 2024, NGOs mobilized an average of 156 billion CFA francs per year, creating over 11,000 direct jobs. In 2024 alone, their actions raised more than 250 billion CFA francs, generating 9,151 permanent jobs and 17,721 temporary ones, while contributing 17 billion CFA francs to tax revenues.

Despite security challenges and regional sanctions, NGOs have demonstrated resilience. The government has reaffirmed its commitment to improving their governance by ensuring that their activities align with national priorities, promoting financial transparency, and enforcing compliance with security guidelines. A more coherent partnership framework will be established to maximize their impact, in line with the recommendations of the 2022 national consultations. This strengthened collaboration is expected to enable more targeted and effective interventions in support of Niger’s development.
