Burkina Faso inaugurates three new solar power plants to promote sustainable development

The Prime Minister of the Transition, Apollinaire Joachim Kyélem de Tambèla, has inaugurated two new solar power plants in the west of Burkina Faso, while the third was inaugurated by General Kassoum Coulibaly.

The first facility, located in the commune of Bobo-Dioulasso, will produce an average of 73 GWh per year for the national grid.

The second, in Pa, has a capacity of 54.15 GWh per year, enabling 31,000 households to be connected to the grid.

Mohamed Zerouali, who is in charge of the project, emphasised the importance of the Pa power station for the economic development of the Boucle du Mouhoun region, by ensuring a secure supply of green energy for local industries.

The third power station, named Zano, is a solar photovoltaic plant in the Centre-East region, and was commissioned on 18 December 2023 in the presence of the Minister of Defence, Kassoum Coulibaly.

Minister Coulibaly highlighted Burkina Faso’s solar potential, with one of the highest levels of sunshine in the sub-region and on the African continent, estimated at 5.5 kilowatts per square metre per day.

He stressed the need to capitalise on this potential to take advantage of the comparative economic benefits it offers compared with fossil fuels.
